With the completion of the 2018 FAL Kickstarter, I begin to focus on new FAL projects. Some of these projects have been in the works while others are truly new. Ill talk about these a bit below...
FAL Card Game
Yep, a card game. The theme is FAL. The goal is to crush your opponents. This is all done by drawing and playing cards, creating armies, rolling dice, attacking and defending, collecting XP, and making your friends feel bad in the process. The game is nearly done with a few rules tweaks/simplifications continuing. We've done extensive playtesting with 2, 3, and 4 people at this point. It plays best with 4 people but 2 and 3 work fine. We will test with 5 and see soon. Game play for 4 is around 20-30 minutes usually. The game is flexible and can be modified to fit your time constraints (as the requirements to win can be modified).
The cards feature FAL characters, creatures, and weapons. They are super colorful and I think the image artwork looks great. I am still in the process of laying out the actual card design. Once that is done, Ill begin posting some images. The plan is to release this game in spring of next year via Kickstarter.
Far Away Land: Adventures in the Materiosphere
My goal over the last few years is to get to a point in my creative output where I have multiple projects at different states of completeness. I think I have been working/talking about Adventures in the Materiosphere (AitM) for nigh on three years now.
AitM is FAL in space, specifically, the Materiosphere. This book takes players and GMs beyond FAL and into the Materiosphere (and beyond). The book has continued to balloon in size as lore and history, planets and species get added. Tons of writing has been completed. Starships and starship combat mechanics have been completed. Loads of artowrk has been completed. One of the things I wanted to do with this book was come up with a novel approach to star travel. (As this project nears completion I will talk more on this.)
Right now, my hope for AitM is to complete it and release it this time next year. It will be a fat book full of insanity.
Far Away Land: Arcane Secrets (FALAS)
This is the magic book for FAL that contains loads of spells, items, weapons, lore, NPCs, new monsters, etc. However, to make this book stand apart from the average expansion book, FALAS will have loads of mini games that allow players to create magic based PCs and adventure those PCs from a young age into adulthood. This book expands the lore and setting of FAL while also offering all kinds of little extras to make for games inside the game. I think it is a fresh take on an expansion book and it is how I plan to write expansions in the future.
If all goes to plan, FALAS will release in 2020.
Besides the core of FAL, I have a FAL novel in the works that explores the adventures of Gruun the Orka, Mirabell the Human, and Buzzles the Simian. It is a middle grade novel. I am undecided on whether I will publish it through Simian Circle Games or seek a traditional publication. If I self-publish this work, I will release it next year. It is intended to be the first book of a trilogy.
I suppose I can also talk about my novel which will be coming out in either 2019 or 2020. It has already been picked up by a publisher in the UK. Contracts are signed. Now its a waiting game. This work has nothing to do with FAL as it is an apocalyptic, magical realism, horror novel set from 1940 to 1980 as the world is coming to an end. It is non-linear in form and similar in approach to something like Cloud Atlas. It is literary fiction for adults.
RPG WorldBuilder is leaving the domain of an app and moving to a browser near you. Doing things in Python and Django offers us a bunch more flexibility and allows for easier updates. The goal is to create a badass piece of software that helps gamers and GMs build maps and create adventures. Work has already begun on this pursuit and it will slowly move into the main pipeline.
So, that's where I am creatively. There are other smaller creative projects I am involved with but I have already written more than I intended. I will say that I have a print and play war game and a dungeon crawl game in the works. Anyway, if you read this far, thanks. New stuff is coming.
