Work continues on the new creature book for FAL. I have gone back and redrawn every entry from Creatures Vol. 1 to fit a more updated, loose style. I have included a couple old and a new creatures below...
The plan is to continue releasing monthly adventures for FAL. Starting in September, these adventures will begin to feature prominent dungeons within the world. The first in the "D series" (Dungeon Series) was the malevolent Dastardly Dungeon of Doom. This series will be continuing with a string of dungeons and histories for FAL.
I am also currently updating the Tome of Awesome. There are some things I wanted to revise and some things I wanted to make more clear. There are also some errors in the text that need revision. Also, there are no rules for vehicle combat. All of this is being resolved. The vehicle combat system has been in a test phase. It is a simple two part system that allows for both up-close and distance vehicle combat (think of PCs in a car shooting and a bunch of fighters circling a space hulk). This two part system is meant to be interchangeable and allow a great deal of flexibility when using vehicle combat. It's also very light in crunch. It is a universal system that can handle ground, sea, air, and space vehicles. So, you learn one set of rules for all vehicle combat types.
I would like to do a Kickstarter for all of the new FAL stuff coming out. A big fat Kickstarter with tons of books and adventures for FAL. That's the plan...
I would like to invite everyone in the FAL community to take a stab at the FAL Adventure Quest Contest. All you have to do is solve the clues and send us your answers. The prize is this Far Away Land bundle which includes a Tome of Awesome Premium Edition, a handmade one-of-a-kind noknil statuette, a pack of FAL monster cards, and a pack of Dungeon Architect Cards fresh off the Kickstarter press! And it doesn't cost anything to enter (well, the price of a stamp). The bigger the response, the more likely we will offer these contests in the future. If you are unsure how to get in on this, download the following four FAL adventures...
Dastardly Dungeon of Doom
Temple of Zoko
In the back of each adventure we have kindly included the instructions/clues. Everyone still has plenty of time to get in on this as responses to the contest aren't due until September 1st.
The lengthy process of drawing huge amounts of monsters continues. For the past few days, I have been revising monsters from Creatures Volume 1. The reason for the revision is mostly aesthetic with a touch of utility. The art in the original FAL core books was somewhat limited by the technology at my disposal during their creation. The way I created each piece was to sketch it out on paper. For more complex pieces I sketched out each character and each background element as a separate piece. I then scanned each sketch, made a composite piece in Photoshop and then imported each composite piece into a vector based drawing program. After I redrew each piece in vector, I dropped the piece back into Photoshop to color them. This all took an extraordinary amount of time and resulted in very simple, sometimes static drawings. While the simplicity of the drawings was something that I wanted, there were levels of complexity I also wanted but was unable to achieve for whatever reason. Now, my workflow has changed. Every piece since the release of the books has been drawn and colored digitally. No more scanning. No more composites. No more paper. The result is a faster, more fluid look of greater detail and control. Below are some of the revised creatures from Creatures Vol. 1.
The style isn't changing as I feel like it is largely what defines the feel of the game. What is changing is the level of detail in some things.
I think I mentioned this in the previous post, but all of the creatures in Creatures Vol. 1 will be present in the new creature book (yet to be named) along with a plethora of new stuff. Each entry is getting its own page which means fuller descriptions, adventure hooks, and more details. Each creature is also getting its own image of course along with a human size comparison silhouette. Some entries are being revised a bit and all are being expanded (with each entry coming in about 200 words).
I have no clue why the cow steed looks so uneasy...
So the DAC Kickstarter has completely shipped - almost two months earlier than the expected delivery date. Feedback has been extremely positive and it feels good to finish a project and know that people are happy with the results. It also feels good to move beyond the administration/shipping phase and back into a creative phase of work.
This week restarted the work on the Far Away Land Creatures Volume 2. This book will be replacing the original FAL Creature Vol. 1 because it contains not only all of the creatures from the first book, but about 150 new creatures as well (the total creature count will be around 230). New artwork is being created for every entry in the book. Also, each creature has its own page with stats, descriptions, size comparisons, adventure hooks, and description. I asked about what people would like to see in a creature book and the FAL G+ community responded. So, I took a bunch of those ideas and started to implement them. There is a bunch of other stuff going in the book as well, but I'll talk about all that later. I will also start posting some of the new stuff in the book. Here are the Horror (which can also be found in the newest FAL adventure, Barkoon)!
Finally, I'm going to start using this damn blog. I generally get caught up in writing and making stuff and forget to talk about it. I also forget that talking about it often leads me in new directions of thinking/creating. Try and do this at least three times a week...
